Cute as a Button!

I created this cute button heart mold for a simple Valentine's Day cake.

For the border we are using the new silver isomalt nibs from CakePlay and the new bead mold they are offering.

Melt the isomalt in a microwave safe cup.  I used a silicone measuring cup.  Carefully pour the isomalt into the cavity in a stream.

Once the isomalt is "semi-set" but not "cold" flip the mold over and gently bend back off the isomalt.  It may need a gently coax to get it started.

Then I gently shaped it around the edge of the board.

I also used the silver isomalt in a few heart mold to add some contrast.  Again I carefully poured the isomalt to fill each cavity to see which I liked best done in the isomalt.

The red buttons are fondant used in various button and heart molds available from Decorate the Cake.

You Gotta Have Heart!

Last February we posted these marbled hearts and several people sent notes asking how we did these.  I am finally getting around to writing this up.

Start with equal size pieces of fondant.

I then twisted them together.

Roll into a ball.

Place in the cavity.

And used my rolling pin to flatten it all out.

And there you have it!

Conversation Hearts

Just in time for Valentine's Day you can make some lovely hearts for your sweetie!

I'm going to show the steps for the two toned hearts.  I take two similar size blobs of  sugarpaste (I used fondant - you can do candy clay, gumpaste, etc).

Then I twist them together.  Looks like a colorful slug to me.

And roll into a smooth ball.

Place the smooth ball in the cavity.  Yeah, this one changed back to all pink for the photo - very odd.

Then I use my rolling pin to smooth out and push the sugarpaste into the cavity.

Once finished I pop them in the freezer for just a couple minutes so I don't squish them when I pop them out.

And all finished!
